A ceramic studio since 1982

​Olaria Velha (The Old Pottery) in Porches, near Lagoa, was founded by Jorge Mealha in 1976. It was well known for its vibrant tile panels, decorative wall plates and bull sculptures.
 

In 1980 Janet moved from Scotland to work with Jorge at Olaria Velha.

By 1981 renovation work had started at the old farmhouse near Lagos which would become “Casa dos Oleiros“ (The Potters’ House). After an exhausting summer driving every day between Lagos and Porches, the studio moved permanently to Lagos.

The first gas kiln was built which allowed us to transition from low fired earthenware to high fired porcelain and stoneware ceramics. The studio has produced hand-thrown pottery, tiles sculpture and unique, decorative pieces over the years.
